53rd Annual Grammy Awards = One Big Disappointment

New Artist Award Snatched from Justin Bieber
There were, in my opinion, 2 MAJOR upsets in this years Grammy awards. The first one being with the Best New Artist Award, and the 2nd, Eminem.
Who is Esperanza Spalding? A question many of us were asking last night as the Grammy Award for Best New Artist was announced, and it wasn't Justin Bieber.
The 53rd Annual Grammy Award Ceremony was one that got a lot of buzz going on the social communities. for me it was very disappointing. Overall it was a good show, it's the award choices that threw everyone off, such as with the New Artist Award. The nominees for this category were
- Justin Bieber
- Esperanza Spalding
- Drake
- Mumford & Sons (another unheard of to me)
- Florence (of Florence and the Machine) ??
- and did I mention JUSTIN BIEBER?
Now I'm not one of those crazed teeny boppers who are hypnotized by the Bieb, but he is a cutie, and I do like his songs. It's no secret the Bieber Craze that has taken over the world the last several months. Especially due to Justin's new movie that has been promoted very strongly. I honestly thought this was a given. So when the winner was announced, and it was some woman named Esperanza Spalding, I think I felt the earth vibrate from a synonymous "WHAAAAT?" across the nations! Shortly followed by a "Who is Esperanza Spalding. Including me, I've never heard of her, as was the case for several of the nominees and winners tonight.
Esperanza Spalding, besides being the one who snatched Justin Bieber's hopes for the Best New Artist Award this year, is a 26 year old, singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, Jazz Bassist who came onto the show with just 1 nomination. Apparently, that was the only 1 she needed. She appeared on the music scene around 2005, and was immediately named as the next big thing in Jazz-iverse. She is impressive enough to reportedly have earned herself White House recital dates, and notoriety from the likes of Stevie Wonder and other legends in the industry. ""B.B. King once said 'You can't serve two masters, and to me, that means you have to decide.........
UPSET #2: This night was destined to be focused on the most controversial, lyrical genius of all time....Eminem. He went into the Grammy Awards holding 10 nominations, more than any other nominee in this years show, and cam out with only 2 wins as he surprisingly fell back behind Lady Antebellum, who surprised fans globally with their rack up of 5 wins out of the six they had been nominated for. They had the highest number wins for the night.
More on Grammy Night
Now that we covered the biggest upset of the night, there were a ton of other things that made the night very memorable. Some good, some not so good, interesting, funny...... for example, did you get to see Lady Gaga's transportation down the Red Carpet? It was none other than a giant, opaque egg in which she hatched herself out of during her performance. Even if you don't like Lady Gaga, you can at least say that she is original, and very interesting to say the least.
One of the main topics of the night were the Hot Shots who performed in the show. Of course there was Barbara Streisand, who looked beautiful, and ageless. She received this years MusiCare Award. One of the most prestigious awards you can receive in the music industry.
Also there and performing was none other than Bob Dylan himself. He performed in collaboration with the group Mumford & Sons and also the Averett Brothers. Dr. Dre made an appearance to perform with Eminem, and one for the history books.....Mick Jagger, after all these decades of being in the music industry, performed for his first time ever, performing at the Grammy Awards. It was definitely a night of rarities.
Dolly Parton, deservingly, received a Lifetime Achievement award, along with Julie Andres, Roy Haynes, Juilliard String Quartet, The Kingston Trio, Ramones, George Beverly Shea.
Christina Aguilera pairs up with Jennifer Hudson (who looks amazing by the way) as well as a few other power females to perform a tribute piece to Aretha Franklin. During this act Christina trips and nearly falls right off the stage but manages to keep herself up by grabbing a mic stand. This poor girl can't catch a break.
If you aren't a member of Tumblr, you may think about joining. One of the Red Carpet interviews was a girl who won a contest on Tumblr that got her to the Grammys. All she had to do was write about her favorite music memory, which just so happened to be of a time she got to see Rolling Stones perform for free.
Neil Young FINALLY after all these years, won his first Grammy Award.
One last thing that I'll remember about tonight, it getting to watch a member of the Superbowl 2011 Champs present an award. Good ol' Clay Matthews. He seemed so comfortable there too. It was a nice change and he's one of my favorites from the Pack!
To see photos and videos of al the events of the night, just visit Grammy.com. You can look over Grammy Events from this year, or you can travel back in time and search through the archives. I finally tore myself away from there, I was enjoying looking over the Grammy Award Events from decades ago and seeing how much different they are than in today's times.

it was sad that Tyler Dow Bryant never even was nominated. ||To me he is next rising star. An amazing guitarist.
