So you want to go to college! GREAT! Ugh....

College....that word is a word that can evoke many emotions. Excitement, pride, nervousness, fear, STRESS, emptiness (your wallet). Let's face it, whether you're a parent of a child getting ready to enter college, already is in college, or if you are the one trying to go to college, it can be very stressful. The cost for tuition has been rising ever since I can remember. From collegeboard.com, I saw the annual price one can expect to pay for a year of college now days ranges anywhere from around $2,000 to up in the 10's of thousands PER YEAR. That's not mentioning the other basic expenses. Although there are plenty of different scholarships out there available, more times than not, a student is not going to get an easy ride when it comes to going to college. There is financial aid though, and some students are able to receive that. But scholarships and financial aid don't cover EVERYTHING. There are 5 BASIC expense types that breakdown like this:

  • Tuitions and Fees.
  • Room and Board
  • Books and Supplies
  • Personal Expenses
  • Transportation

You get the idea, so enough about that, because I know it can be a little depressing to think about too hard. So onto the main thing I am going to share with you that I found.

STRAIGHT FROM UPROMISE PRESIDENT

Words from our President

"Upromise's goal is to help individuals attain the dream of higher education. Only 5 percent of people are prepared to fully pay the expected costs of college. Through Upromise earnings and low-cost college savings plans, we make it easier for people at all life stages and income levels to help pay for college."

WHAT IS UPROMISE?

Have you heard of them? If you have, Great. If not, keep reading. Upromise a program I came across recently that caught my attention long enough for me to read through most of the sight. When I say that, it really means this site is AWESOME because I NEVER sit at any one place that long in one setting.

Upromise is a company launched nearly a decade ago, based on the principle that everyone should be able to have the chance at a college education. It is a service of Sallie Mae, which should account for something. To date there is a 10 million member base at UPromise, meaning that they are helping this goal be attainable for many people.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

What's great about this opportunity, is that you don't have to do anything different than you have been doing up to this point. If you are like every other individual, you probably shop, buy groceries, go out to eat on occasion, gas up your vehicle, travel maybe sometimes. These are all the things that this program awards you for. Every day that you pass up by not signing up, you are missing many opportunities to be putting money into your child's or your own college fund. Upromise allows you to be rewarded for doing the things you do on a daily basis anyway. Partnered up with over 800 Merchants, over 8000 restaurants, with travel companies, gas companies, it makes it virtually impossible to NOT earn with UPromise. The merchants are common named ones in your household, like Walmart, Target, Old Navy, American eagle, Sally Beauty Supply, Home Improvement Stores, Upscale stores and Mass merchandise stores alike. Each time you participate in any of these activities, you accrue reward money that collects into an account, your own, and it also NEVER EXPIRES. So you don't have to worry about losing it if not used by a certain time.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

  • Everyone can participate:
  • Students
  • Parents of Students
  • Family or Close friends can contribute to a students account by joining UPromise and aiming the award points at a certain student.
  • If you are furthering your education for career purposes, you can join.
  • You can join, and you, and you, and even you.

WHAT TYPES OF STORES ARE THEY PARTNERED WITH?

If you are worried you don't shop at any of the merchants that are partnered UPromise, believe me, it's almost impossible NOT to. As stated earlier, they are partnered with over 800 merchants, over 8,000 restaurants, and also gas stations, travel companies, and more. Here is a very short list of their featured merchant partners at right.:
